Shooting
On November 20th, at 9:32 PM, Hernendez entered the parking lot with his Ride-On Lawnmower, and a rifle slung across his chest.
He entered the gas station at 9:34, and opened fire on the 2 night shift cashiers, and a customer.
He then moved to the right hand side of the store, striking a mother and her child.
This was when he barricaded himself inside the gas station with 2 other people who were not struck.
At 9:36 the first LCSO unit arrived on scene and was met with heavy gunfire from inside the building, prompting him to hit his panic button and trigger a multi-agency response comprised of the Liberty County Sheriff's Office [including the Spedcial Weapons and Tactics unit], Springfield Township Police, and Springfield Township Fire and EMS.
The original deputy who had arrived on-scene was struck, was transported to Liberty County Hospital, and has since made a full recovery.
Joe, however, still had 2 people hostage, and was making demands, such as letting him free, and giving him a head start on escape.
The demands were not met in time.
An unarmed negotiator who was talking with Joe, was shot, and a hostage was killed, before an LCSO Marksman could get a good view, and shoot Joe through the head, ending the standoff.
The negotiator was able to be dragged back to safety, and LCSO SWAT Medics attempted life-saving measures.
Sadly, they were unsuccessful.
The death toll, including Joe, was 8.
