Summary
In 2008, a plane named Speed 2.0 left the runway while taking off and ended up in the Big Rock Island International Airport parking lot. Investigations concluded that the plane's right landing gear was experiencing maintenance problems, which caused the landing gear to turn at an angle of 50°. There were 34 people in the parking lot. At the time of impact, 18 people were injured and 16 died from the fire that spread. Many were hit by the plane and few were burned because they were in places with a high chance of fire. The fire spread so much that it reached the airport. At the airport, no one realized that there was a fire near two small planes, but when they realized it, it was too late. At the airport, the number of deaths increased, and the number of injuries increased tragically. In total, 56 people died and 145 were injured. This was one of the worst disasters on Big Rock Island.
