The 1998 North Bloxifornian gubernatorial election was held on November 3, 1998, to elect the governor of North Bloxifornia for the next four years. The election saw incumbent Democratic Governor Linda Howell seeking re-election for a second term against Republican challenger William "Bill" Kensington, as well as notable third-party candidates, including Joseph Carrington (Independent), David Reynolds (Libertarian), and Margaret Liu (Green Party). Howell, who was first elected in 1994, entered the race with high approval ratings, largely due to her administration’s focus on education reform, infrastructure development, and healthcare expansion. However, her tenure faced some controversy, as economic challenges, rising state expenditures, and growing political opposition created a divisive political climate. The 1998 election was considered a referendum on Howell’s leadership, with Republicans aiming to regain control of the governor’s office after eight years of Democratic rule.

The election saw the Democratic incumbent, Linda Howell, face off against Republican nominee William Kensington, a former Lieutenant Governor (1991–1995) and businessman, known for his fiscal conservatism and pro-business policies. Kensington ran on a platform advocating for tax cuts, deregulation, and reducing government spending, arguing that Howell’s policies had increased the state’s budget deficit and placed excessive burdens on businesses. Howell, in contrast, campaigned on continuing her initiatives from her first term, which included increasing funding for public schools, improving state healthcare programs, and expanding public transportation systems which was also implemented from 1987 to 1995. The race also saw the participation of third-party candidates, including Joseph Carrington, a former state senator turned Independent, who focused on government transparency and anti-corruption efforts, as well as David Reynolds of the Libertarian Party, a small-business owner advocating for minimal government intervention and free-market policies. Additionally, Margaret Liu of the Green Party campaigned on climate policies, renewable energy investment, and social justice initiatives. The campaign was highly competitive.
