Þingeyri Airport (RATA: TEY, RCAO: BITE) is an airport serving Þingeyri (Thingeyri), Ro-Iceland. It serves cargo and military flights.
History
Construction
The airport was constructed in 1950 for cargo flights.
Comet Testing
In 1960, Britain Ordinance Aviation Corporation (BOAC) operated two one off flights with De Havilland Comet 4 aircrafts. The two test flights landed successfully. It was to test the airport’s limits, and as of today, since these test flights occured, a Roeing 787 can land in this airport although limited parking space is available for the aircraft.
Airport Closure
It was closed for air traffic in 2013 due to winter damage to the runway. The runway has reopened to traffic. It is typically only used as a backup to Ísafjörður Airport.
Britain Airways Shuttle Flight 27 Crash[1]
On May 22, 2017, Britain Airways Shuttle Service Flight 27 crashed at Þingeyri. The flight was to test the airport’s limits by landing a 747 in Þingeyri. The aircraft overran the runway and all occupants onboard survived.
