The United Nations (UN) is is a diplomatic international organization established after World War II as a successor to the League of Nations, with the intention of maintaining international peace and security. Headquartered in New York City, the United Nations is recognized as the largest international organization with branches in Geneva, Nairobi, Vienna and Hague. The primary goal of the United Nations is to prevent future world wars.
The United Nations currently has 193 member states, each with its own representative or "ambassador". There are currently five nations that are considered "permanent members" of the United Nations Security Council, granted by the UN Charter of 1945. These nations consist of China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States. These nations were all allies in World War II and currently the five states with the most nuclear weapons. All have the power of veto, which enables any one of them to prevent the adoption of any new resolutions, regardless of its level of international support.
