Personal life

Born in Bournemouth, in the United Kingdom, Atkinson and her family moved to the United States when she was nine years old. They lived in Hollywood, Florida, but she eventually went to Yale Drama School.

She is married to Michael Gill, who portrayed President of the United States Garrett Walker. They have one son together.
